measured building survey

"It is not knowledge, but the act of learning, not possession but the act of getting there, which grants the greatest enjoyment."

(Carl Friedrich Gauss)

The pioneer days of computers

Here is a little story:

In the years 1987/1988 Markus Groll discovered his enthusiasm for historic buildings during his studies of architecture and created a measured survey with great accuracy of the town hall in Gundelfingen an der Donau.

The town all was built  in 1777/78 by the master builders Dominikus Haller, Johann Reich and Balthasar Baur .

The documentation was produced on distortion-proof paper according to the requirements from the authorities for historic preservation ... but not enough … all measurements were transferred in CAD in AutoCAD and the CAD-Software “Spirit” and all further designs for a new use or additions to the building were developed with the flexibility an CAD software provides. This was quite sensational, as those were the pioneer days of computers and CAD-software in particular….

Since then the experiences were helpful to improve and strengthen the techniques for a lot of new building plans, refurbishments, CAFM- and FM-projects.

Since then we rely on:

... experience, accuracy, self-monitoring, checks on plausibility, good comprehension of construction and details .... combined with profound knowledge of technical standards .... and supported by technology ....

Surveying has occurred since humans built the first large structures.

In ancient Egypt, a rope stretcher would use simple geometry to re-establish boundaries after the annual floods of the Nile River.
